Antoin H. L. Kessel bass-baritone

             Born in Havana, Cuba, the bass-baritone Antoin Herrera-López Kessel studied classical and contemporary dance from an early age. After a year of preparation at the Instituto Superior de Artes in Havana, he was admitted to the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Besançon, France, and then to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Lyon, France.           

            The bass-baritone Antoin Herrera-López Kessel made his European debut with the world premiere of the opera Giordano Bruno, by Francesco Filidei and Ensemble Intercontemporain, commissioned by T&M Paris. In 2016, he joined the residency program at the Festival d’Aix en Provence – Résidence Mozart and was invited by the Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, to sing the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi as member of ENOA program.

In 2018, Antoin HLKessel was selected to participate at the Queen Elisabeth Voice Competition also invited to perform at La Biennale di Venezia College – Musica for the creation of Push, an opera by Alvise Zambon. The same year, he sang the huge monodrama for baritone and orchestra: Sodom und Gomorrah by Karl Amadeus Hartman, text of Jean Giroudaux, with Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille.

            Currently a member of the mentoring initiative EQUILIBRIUM created and directed by Barbara Hannigan for young professional musicians, Antoin HLKessel sang in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie and at the Ojai Festival, and was the bass soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Pulcinella with Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.

For the 2019/2020 season, he has been engaged by Basel Opera Theater, beginning the season with Luigi Nono's Al Gran Sole Carico d’Amore as bass soloist, Basilio in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Hobson in Britten's Peter Grimes, Beaggers in Milhaud's La Mère Coupable and the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro.

          The season 2020/2021 start with the world premiere of Julia Purgina's Der Durst der Hyäne at the Sirene Opern Theater in Viena. Later, he will sing Sparafucile in Rigoletto, at the Klagenfurt Stadttheater.
